    Shopplifting charges under 5,000
I was caught shoplifting in the grocery store and charged with shoplifting under 5,000 and I have also changed some prices to lower amounts so now I am facing two charges. Total is approx. $ 80. I had a problem 20 years ago but this was with my previous employer. I am 57 years old. I am very worried what is going too happened now and don’t know what to do. Will something what happened 20 years ago affect me today? Do I have to disclose the previous issue or not?
How do I find a reputable lawyer in my area? Who can I talk to?

You need a criminal law attorney. If you can afford one, pick a few, check with the Bar Association for recommendations.

If 20 years ago, you were convicted, then it will show up, and will effect you, in that you can not get a first offender program if you were previously arrested and charged.

You do not have to confess to anything, so you are not required to provide them any info, without talking to an attorney first

Thank you for the answer Fr_Chuck.

Do you need to tell my lawyer about the incident 20 years ago.

Will the police officer attend the court and the grocery store representative?

Can I dealy the court date to put it off for a longer period?

Will I be able to travel to see my
    Gravely ill mother?

    Thank you.
