My residential R-22 heat pump is being replaced this week with heavy involvement of this author. The old 2 ton system experienced compressor burn-out and loss of all R-22. When we severed the copper lines the stench of burned compressor oil permeated the house.

I'm replacing the entire A/C system (new A-coil and condensing unit) but not the copper lines. Replacing these lines would require re-drywalling the living room ceiling and a petition to the architectural committee of the condo association.

I intend to blow out the copper lines with an air compressor and tank and thereafter evacuate these lines with a pump. A new filter dryer on the new system is assumed.

Would back-flushing the copper lines with a gallon of new, clean, R22-compatible refrigerant oil be helpful and contribute to longer life of the new system?

Given that I am putting a new condensing unit and A-coil, is flushing of the existing copper lines even necessary? Could be that I'm being too anal about this.

I would flush it with an A/C system specific flush fluid. You MUST get ALL of the debris out of the system or the new compressor will self destruct.

Can I acquire this line set flushing fluid from an Internet-based distributor or an open-access retail supplier like Grainger? Under what product name?

In central Indiana mere mortals are precluded from visiting retail outlets that cater to HVAC tradesmen. The reasons go beyond simple sales tax issues.

You can get a RX -11 flush kit at any hvac store. Do you have a freon license?
