My central unit has stopped working. Please help!
A couple of months ago, my blower started making a terrible sound like the bearings were going out. My roommate kept running the unit even though I told him not to. About a week later, the unit stopped working altogether. I'm not certain, but I think it may just be the blower motor. I am a bit concerned, though, because the fins still move freely if I turn them manually. When I flip the switch on the blower unit to "on", it makes a sound as though it is trying to engage, but the motor will kick in. I went on to grainger to attempt to find a replacement motor. The plate on the motor says it is 1/3 hp, 1050 rpm, 240V, 60 Hz, 2.8 amps, 1 ph, cap. 7.50/370. I don't know what to do. The unit was manufactured in 1985 and I can't afford to have the technician come out to repair. Could it be the relay as well? I only want to have to bust this thing out once.

I would replace the 7.5 mFd/370 Volt Capacitor and give it a try. If you have voltage to motor and it doesn't spin, it is likely bad, and may be the only problem. Does the outside unit kick in?

I'll try the capacitor tomorrow. I don't know about the outside unit. Haven't checked it :D sorry. What would it mean if the outside unit doesn't kick on?

Then the transformer that supplies voltage to compressor contactor and inside fan motor from thermostat may have blown a fuse, and you may have a low voltage problem as well, no big deal. Any reaction from the thermostat?

Thermostat does try to kick the inside unit on. Same sound as when I manually change the blower to "ON".

So does the outside unit kick in when set to cool? Capacitor?

Okay. I'm confused. I turned my unit back on after I pulled the thingy with 4 metal things on it (says to remove before attempting work on blower unit). I was going to check to see if the outside unit kicks on. The whole thing started working again. I have cold air. Kids should be really happy.
