Need to replace tub diverter - stressed out
    Hi,

This is my first home and much to my surprise, the shower doesn't work. I did some research and found that part of my problem is that the diverter in the tub has corroded away and now the water only comes from the spout, not the shower.

We are trying to take off the spout to replace it, but it is not budging - WD40 and all. This is is an old cast iron tub with the pipe standing free from any walls. I looked under the spout and don't see any place for the allen key.

Does anyone have suggestions - other than calling a plumber?

    Thanks,
    Jenn

    Hi Jenn,

" I looked under the spout and don't see any place for the allen key."

Then you have a chrome over brass threaded diverter spout. Since you're going to replace the spout anyhow, place a pipe wrench on the spout and back the spout out counterclockwise.
This spout connects to a nipple coming out of the wall. If the nipple comes out with the spout don't worry. Take everything into a plumbing shop and get it replaced. Don't forget to Teflon Tape the threads when you replace it.
    Good luck, tom
