Hard lump on 4 year old dog's back. Something metallic-like appears every so often on top of the lump. Any ideas? She was microchipped at the shelter 3 years ago.

What did the vet say about it? How long has she had this lump? What do you mean something metallic like appears? Can you post a picture of it?
Also is this a hunting dog?
What were yo thinking Califdad?
If it's a hunting dog its possible the dog may have taken a nonlethal bullet or pellets from a shotgun. It could caus the same symptoms.
I was thinking tick. But I am sure it would look like a great big white lump.
Lol what's a bird dog or hunting dog have to do with a lump on the back of the dog?
How big is the lump? Typically bullets or pellet bullets don't resurface. If this were a microchip, I doubt you'd see it. They're tiney.
The lump appears then goes away? You should really be talking to a vet. That doesn't sound normal. There is something under the skin and an infection is seeming to come and go. If left unattended, the bodys natural immune system is going to weaken and won't be able to fight off the infection. If it appears shiney, it could very well be an allergic reaction the metal itself. It could be a bullet, however I've never heard of bullets appearing and then disappearing.
When the lump is down, can you still feel something in that area?

No, Sophie's not a hunting dog.
Today the small black spot appeared again. I scratched it off and there was a hole! I squeezed the lump and clear liquid came out. I think it may be a cyst.
Thanks for responses.
