    Dress sizing
According to a dress sizing chart, I'm all over the place. My sizes based on three spots are as follows:

    Bust: 20/22
    Waist: 16/18
    Hips: 18/20

I have no idea when it comes to sizing. I am clueless on the topic of dresses. The kind of dress I am getting is most likely going to be a ball gown style dress (this is for prom by the way). What size should I get? I'm very confused because of the sizing differences for my waist, bust, and hips

I've found that most times sizes really don't matter. It depends on the cut of the clothing, the manufacturer, and many other things.

I can go anywhere from a size 9 to a size 12 depending on the clothes.

Your best bet is to try things on. When it comes to a ball gown many times you'll have to get alterations done. So pick the one that fits you best overall and then take in the areas that don't work.

Of course we'll want pictures. :)

    I can't afford alterations...

I have a dress in my closet that is size 18, it almosts fits except over the bust.

Prom is on the 28th and I'm going crazy trying to find a dress... Thanks for your advice Alty-mommy

Alterations aren't that hard, depending on where they need to be done.

If I was closer I'd do them for you. :)

The bad thing about ball gowns is that they go off basic size. In other words, a size 18 is size 18 all the way through. Most people aren't a size 18 on top middle and bottom.

Have you considered a two piece? That would give you more wiggle room. :)

Yes, but I'm very uncomfortable in a two piece anything. I get very very self conscious

I have found that you buy a dress that fits that largest part of your body and then have the remainder of it altered to fit. It is easier to take a dress in than it is to let it out.

There really are some beautiful two piece dresses available right now - or a dress with a camisole and jacket.
