Hi, All!

Let's say that a juvenile has committed a felony or felonies. The record(s) of the conviction or convictions is sealed by the Judge.

Can the sealed conviction records of a juvenile ever be used as a bar to that person obtaining schooling and/or employment in the future?

What kind of employment? Government? Clerking in a store? Employment requiring bonding or licensing?

If the records have been sealed by a judge, the only persons that will be able to look at it is if your getting a job as a Police Officer, Army, or something that needs in depth background. Once the juvenile turns 18 they can get their records sponged meaning getting your record cleared.

This is not entirely correct - ANY Government background check will find it.

It's not sponged - it's expunged amd that varies by State.

Okay, let's try this again.

Basically, any kind of schooling or employment.

Age at time of offense and conviction could be early to late teen years before the age of 18. Trial and subsequent conviction would be as a juvenile.

I have found that juv records are never entered into NCIC so they are not seen by government, and just not visible on any search unless a special court order to release juv records is gotten.

They are not explunged they are sealed as a juv records. But only those done in Juv court ( family court in many places,)

Say that the state is Virginia.. does anyone know what applies to Virginia state laws?

In NY this cannot be answered as a general question because it varies by who is searching, the type of crime, the specific age (over 16, under 16).

Here is my confusion - in NY all matters in Juvenile Court are not entered. Some are, depending on the charge and type of crime. Even if removed the footprint remains.

Certain Government Agencies can access sealed records without a Court Order when doing a background check.

Again - this may be one of those "not one answer suits all" questions.
