    Puppy not gaining weight
I have ten day old Scottish terrier puppy , born fine then after 2 day he started to get cold and not too interested in feeding, I set about feeding him with puppy milk, he seemed to gain weight but today day 10 he started to lose weight again I have got him to suckle and he really goes for it but is so eager he misses the nipple his brothers are doing very well, he's from litter of 3, the weight of the largest one is 410 grams and he's 165grams, I have made appointment to See the vet tomorrow, but really need help from all you breeders, I'm well experienced breeder but I'm at loss as what to do for the best. Ive been trying to feed him every 2hrs some times he fights me and really doesn't want me to give him extras.

How is your whelping box set up and at what temp?

Was he always the runt, or has he been gradually losing weight?

Any obviously deformities in the mouth or palette?

The temp is at steady 20c it the es whelping box we have always used he's not got cleft palette, he was the last born, he gains weight then loses it, all very frustrating he is very small 160g the largest at 450g, he tries to feed off mum but unless I'm with him he gets pushed off he so eager he can't find the teat. He at the vet today so hope he can help.

You take the dog to a Vet to make sure this is nothing serious.

How do you know the puppy has a "tummy ache"?

Please combine all of your questions about this puppy on one thread - all of this info is important. After reading your other thread I am very sure this dog needs to see a Vet.

What is gripe water? How did you help him go to the loo? This is a very small dog and you have to be very careful (of course).

You need to call the Vet and tell the Vet he is very weak and describe these symptoms in detail.

I'm glad the vet gave him the all clear, sorry it has taken me so long to get back here.

With his tummy just gently massage it in a downward motion, don't use much pressure, just very gently like mom would do with her tongue to try and encourage him to defecate.
Sounds like things just might be a bit blocked up, especially if he has had a big feed. If it continues for much longer it's back to the vet though I'm afraid.

At 10 days old he really shouldn't be having water just yet, if he is having trouble feeding off mom then bottle feeding puppy formula might be the way to go.

He settled at last, and had 2 hr feeds during the night, but today at same time he started again, rang the on call vet and she said use infacol drops 2 drops in his mouth, and at the moment bliss no crying fingers crossed. The vet said I was right to give him water with tiny bit of sugar in to keep up his energy.I also have got him to do big poo so relief he not blocked.
Gripe water is used for baby's to easy wind and pain, but it only helped the pain a little. Going to try give him feed in couple of hrs the vet said to use bottle not syringe. Thanks to all you left replies it really helps.

It looks like you have explored all avenues with very good results - please keep us informed.

Any pictures of the little guy that you could post?

Ahhh yes, sugar water is good, I thought you were talking about just giving him plain water instead of milk!

Yes, pictures would be great if you have any!

Hes doing well now still very small he's 175g and the others are 550g big difference. The infacol worked very well can recommend it.Still doing night feeds, but seen him feeding off mum but he so tiny he soon gets moved along by the others will try moving them away tomorrow to give him better go at it. He takes about 2.5 mls out of puppy feeder.
Not too sure how to upload you picture of him. Thanks Vivienne and Sam the pup.

Try putting the other pups inside a small cardboard box while the little one has a feed.
Keep the cardboard box close to moms head so she doesn't stress out about you moving them.
That way the bigger pups are out of the way and the littley can have a good feed.

To upload a picture click on the "Go Advanced" button below the reply box.
Then click on the little paperclip looking icon at the top of the box on the next screen.
A pop up window will appear and you just click on 'browse' to find your picture and then click on 'upload'
Once it's uploaded, click off that box and hit 'reply'

It's easy once you get the hang of it ;)

Think it is just feeding, husband can't get to grips with the bottle so uses syringe and he been holding him wrong. At 12pm he was feeding just fine no runny nose or congestion [Husband having crash course in bottle feeding now].
At some stage this morning he must have had a good feed off mum as he weighed 182g need less to say I was delighted.
