There is a functioning genie maxpro system in place only about 3 years old. If I purchase a remote will I have to program the remote or should it work automatically?

I assume this is a garage door opener.

If you purchase a replacement remote it will have to be programmed, but pretty clear instructions come with everyone I have ever seen.
You do have to go up to the head unit to press a programming button though.
