    Sears craftsman rider mower troubleshooting
I own a Sears Craftsman riding mower with a 42" deck. It's 17 horsepower. Every time I engage the blades, the engine cuts off. I can't seem to get the cover that is over the pulley on the left off. I've cleared dried grass from under the deck, and have applied WD 40 to the pulley wheels. The blades on the right (discharge side) turn, but the blade on the left doesn't. The belt(s) are fine. Any suggestions?

    Hi,
Sounds as if you have a seized spindle. They call it a mandrel. Probably need the mandrel housing assy (it should be complete with bearings) and the shaft, possibly.
    Peace,

If this is the first time you have used the mower this year you might be able to free it up. Try taking the belt off that goes between the engine and the deck. Then with some very thick gloves on you should be able to grab the blade that does not turn and work it back and forth until you have it moving again. The reason you take the belt off is for safety. That way there is no possibility that you could inadvertently start the engine by turning it with the blade.

Now, if you have already used it this year then you will need a mandrel.
