Side by side fridge freezer problem
I have a Kenmore side by side fridge model No. 970-563122 Ser. NO. LA13115191
It is frosting up on the freezer side at the back inside and freezing the Crisper drawers on the fridge side. If we unplug and let the frost melt on the freezer side, and then plug back in , it works good for another 3-5 months and then does it again.

There are three components that would cause your problem of icing up:

    1. Defrost heater faulty.
    2. Defrost limit switch faulty.
    3. Defrost timer faulty.

Other than those 3 items there is virtually nothing else causing your problem. One of these are "going" and will finally fail.

Thanks twinkiedooter, we put in one of those adaptive defrost boards as that was what a technician said to do for 90 dollars and obviously did not work. How do you go about testing all of these suggestions. I don't want to pay $90 a crack for bad advice again. Also the part we put in was over a $100. Mind as well buy a new fridge for $500 if it costs me $190 a crack each time. Giggles

Unfortunately these newer digital models tend to take a dump for the least thing. I prefer the models without the bells and whistles and have been fortunate in being able to repair my own fridges on occasion. The side by side models are hard to properly fix. I'd call back the company that put in the pricey board and tell them their "fix" didn't work. Do you have a multitester to be able to test each component to see if they are bad or not? Also you need a schematic of your refrigerator. Here is a link to a parts web site that I've used to determine just where stuff is in my appliances that I need to replace. Hope this helps.

Also I don't think that you have the correct model number because I put your model # in and it came up as a gas stove not a fridge at all.

These people are great. I have ordered many different parts for my fridge, dishwasher, clothes washer, etc. and the parts worked. Reasonable shipping also. And they have folks who can answer your parts questions on the phone if you can't find online. Also when you do enter your correct model number you will get a schematic of your particular appliance so you can see just what parts are involved so you could test these parts if you do own a multimeter or tester.

Maybe the board that guy sold you was bad from the get go.
