A year ago I bought a male Yorkshire terrier which happened to be the most playful and viable animal I have ever seen. It 's like the energizer bunny: ramps about the house until it crashes. But we cannot provide such attention to it and often leave it alone for the day. So my girlfriend and I decided to buy a friend for our yorky so it wouldn't be so lonely. We are considering a "Maltese".
Could anyone give me some information about Maltese breed. And how would those two get along (maybe from their own experience). Also a male or female? Which would be a better companion?

Maltese was probably the world's first lap dog. It developed on the Mediterranean island of Malta more than 2,000 years ago. Ladies in Greek and Roman noble families were fond of these dogs. They carried them in the sleeves of their robes and waited on the dogs as though they were babies. The Maltese grew to be one of the gentlest of all toy dogs. It usually weighs from 4 to 6 pounds (1.8 to 2.7 kilograms). Its black eyes have dark rims that make the eyes look large. Its white coat falls from a part down its back, and may grow so long it trails on the ground.

1. Get him a female.
2. Make sure she is fixed up.
3. They will get on fine.

Hi, I can’t give you much info on the breed specifically, but I can tell give you some advice on getting another dog.

Is your Yorkie well socialized with other dogs? Does she normally get along with other neighbor dogs? Does she do well at the doggy park?
Is your male Yorkie neutered? Seeing as he has been the only baby in the house up until now, he may get a little jealous. That will be something you have to watch out for. Just make sure not to forget about him in the excitement of getting a new family member.

Dogs are very territorial. So before you bring home your new dog to meet the rest of the family, it might be a good idea for them to meet on neutral ground before hand, like the dog park.

When you do bring home your new dog, make sure your Yorkie stays at home, make sure to wear clothes that smell like your Yorkie though. Also when you get home, give him some time to smell around the yard and get used to his new surroundings before bringing him in the house and introducing him to your York.

If your Yorkie is another room (which would be a good idea if one of you can keep him distracted in another room, but not forcing him to stay in any one area), don’t try to bribe him or call him into the room where the new dog is, when your York discovers his new mate on his own, act excited and lots of praise for both dogs. Keep an eye on body language. Do not get angry or yell if they become aggressive, you want this to stay a happy exciting time. A lot of confusion can come if get fearful or angry if they display aggressive behavior. This is going to be a stressful time for both dogs involved so you have to remain calm and level headed. Make sure to treat and praise acceptable behavior.
