Have a starter for a briggs. Won't start engine but spins great off mower. Any suggestions

What model do you have and what size briggs.
Could be nedds valves cleanance adjusted,this will cause a engine to turn hard. Pull the spark
Plug(s) and see how fast it turns.

I removed the spark plug and it still barely turns the engine over. Im at work and I don't have model number with me.

Hi,
Starter may be partially shorted or the contacts in the solenoid may be damaged. Either or both would do what you describe.
