I'm looking for the name of a movie that I watched in the 80's, possibly made for TV. I remember it having a very depressing tone and I think it was about animals. I remember scenes of some kind of an animal that had to keep walking around a tree pushing a bar of some sort and it would slide him back to the start and he kept doing it over again, wearing down a path in the grass. And another scene was under water, with dirty old cans and a cigar box or something, and something lived in the can, maybe a worm. Does this sound familiar to anyone?

The main character is a little bulldog, searching for a mysterious something. He finally finds his father and the answer is found by looking in a reflection of several mirrors and he finds himself.
