We are putting the decorative molding around all our interior doors to our new addition. We have 3 closets, 2 of them with pocket doors and one of them with the mirror sliding doors. My wife and I have a disagreement. One of us thinks that the closet doors should have same trim as all of the 6 other interior doors. The other thinks that since these are closet doors, and different types of doors, that a different kind of trim is called for.. more specifically a more plain kind of trim. What would professionals do?

I vote for the one that thinks that the trim and by that I mean the casing, should be the same. I also put casing around door openings. That door openings with out doors.

Why would you not? It is all decorative opposed to functional. Granted you do not have door stop on sliding or pocket doors but otherwise why not. Why put up crown molding, because it looks good, dresses up the place.

To keep the continuity with the rest of the house, all trim should match. If doing trim with different types, it will not look like it belongs to rest of house.

When selling, this is something that is looked at. A good mechanic will try to match trim.

All custom trim on doors should match. Casing does not have to match, but at least be in the same style. No contemporary with old ornate trim.
