    Animal cruelty
I was just watching on the news how monkeys are being put on treadmills to see if humans need excersise as well as a good diet. Wouldn't it be more realistic to use people. I think people would jump for the opportunity to be involved with an experiment that could improve their health and it just seems really wrong to me that these monkeys that have no choice have to be put on treadmills where they can't get off. Can't they use people for something such as that? I just can't stand to see these poor creatures that can't fight for themselves suffer because people are so cruel. Seeing abused dogs and other animals such as these adorable monkeys just makes me so upset.

I would write into the network that aired it and/or find out who is conducting the study and tell them your concerns. One letter might not make a difference, but for all you know there's a bunch of other people also writing in with concerns.

How do they make them stay on the treadmill? This sounds like a weird study. I thought we already knew we needed exercise...

Do you have a link to the program? I'd like to watch it.

I've heard of using a treadmill for dogs, it's not at all cruel, it's actually for their benefit, especially if they live in an area were daily walks aren't always feasible.

I'd really like to view this program before making a judgment either way.

Um, I thought that had been proven years ago, like, it's common sense? I'd sure love to find out more about this study.

***ADDED***I just found this: “This research shows that simply dieting will not likely cause substantial weight loss. Instead, diet and exercise must be combined to achieve this goal,” said lead researcher Judy Cameron from Oregon Health and Science University. "A comparison group of three monkeys was fed a normal monkey diet and was trained to exercise for one hour daily on a treadmill. This comparison group did lose weight."

"Trained" sounds better than "forced," but it still sounds like a worthless study.

The researchers got them fat deliberately, and then made them lose weight.

Have you ever seen a fat monkey in the wild?

So I am not sure what the program was I just got a glance of it but the monkeys were running on a treadmill that was completely caged in with no room to step off. As I said I don't really know too much about what was going on because I only saw it for a few seconds. It could have been perfectly okay, I just think that humans could be doing this instead of the monkeys. Instead of over feeding them they could just have left them healthy from the beginning, but I suppose that is just one opinion. Thank you for all of your replies and if I find the program I will let you know.

If the monkey's were caged off so they had to run, then yes, I agree, that's cruelty. Sadly animals are often used for experiments like this. The only thing you can really do about it is voice your opinion to the people that aired the program and to the people doing these experiments.

If enough people stand up for animal rights then maybe, just maybe, something can be done to stop it.

This is no different then using animals to test makeup products or drugs. I don't agree with it either. There has to be a better way.

There is a better way.. However, doing medical experiments on animals is a lot cheaper then paying people to do it. So of coarse, the animals draw the short stick because they don't have the ability to say no.

Its horrible that humans have to ruin everything. I tell my mom all the time, God make the worse mistake by creating humans. We're so mean, evil and nasty towards one another, animals and the Earth itself.

I swear, I was born in the wrong era! I should have been a hippie!

    Peace man!

Thank you for your reply. I am with you on that. There has to be another way to test these products. Animals should not have to be used for this "testing" especially because they can't voice whether they want to do this or not.

And the sad thing is, you can't scream loud enough for them :( Shut down one facility, another one pops up!

What I hate the most, is the Chinese! They skin the dogs alive to make real fur trinkets of cat or dog dolls with real cat or dog fur. Sick!

It is sick! It is so disturbing what happens to animals. I know that some animals have a great life but if you look at it there is a whole lot of animals that are suffering for no reason other than the fact that some humans are just cruel

I think it all comes back to the over population of animals.

People breed their animals for on reason. They don't care if the animal is papered, registered, is breed quality... They just want to have puppies.

A few years back, a neighbor of mine wanted to breed their lab at 1 yr of age. For no reason other then the fact that it had papers.

AKC or any other organization doesn't mean the dog is quality enough to breed. It irritates me like no other when people want to breed just because their dog has papers. There is just no thought at all...

And then they sell their puppies at Wal-Mart. You know darn well that 98% of the people who buy puppies from a wal mart parking lot weren't going to wal mart with the intention of buying a puppy. Its all inpulse. The dogs are sold too young, they develop issues, the owners just stick them out back and maybe feed them.

Poor animals.. at the mercy of humans :(

Very True. Although I LOVE dogs and other animals, I think that breeding needs to stop. There are a lot of great pets just waiting out there to have a loving home. There is no need for another animal to be brought in this world only to be neglected.

    What the..

They need monkeys to tell fat people to get their a$$ to the gym?

    That's nothing new.

Of coarse dieting helps with weight, exercise helps with fitness... you can eat lettuce all day and not be fat but you would still be unhealthy and would have no muscle tone.
