Fundamentalism means staying true to the basic underlying tenets.

For the Christian it relates to the inerrant truth of the Biblical texts
For the Muslim it relates to the truth of the Koranic texts
For the Jews it relates to the truth of the Scriptures and the Torah

Fundamentalists tend to put a fence around their beliefs and never open a gate.

It is a comforting way to approach any subject, and works for many people - Jews, Christians, and Muslims. Of course, there are doctrinal differences among these groups, but the underlying psychology is the same - a place of safety in a confusing world.
