Short answer: burn more calories than you eat. In the short term, diet is more important than exercise in losing weight (though exercise is what will keep you fit and healthy throughout your life).

Cut out all the junk food and white carbs. Drink more water, eat more vegetables and whole fruits (not juice) and eat quality fresh protein and fat (oily fish, eggs, meat, nuts etc). Did I mention green vegetables?

Get as much exercise as you can, turn off the television (the ads make it harder to stick to a non-junk diet) and go to bed early.

It is difficult to lose weight safely and for the long term if you give yourself a short time frame. If you have something you want to look/feel better for then let that be your goal and not an arbitrary number.

Eileen G is correct, losing weight in the long term is essentially just about calories, just exercising isn't enough. Studies have found that without dietary control, one will make up for the extra caloric deficit without realizing it after exercising.

Studies have also shown that to lose weight effectively, safely, and for the long term one needs to burn around 2500-2800 calories per week in exercise while at the same time restricting ones diet (keep caloric intake above 1200 calories per day though). This means doing it the hard way, get some cardio in every day, make most of your exercise at a high heart rate, write down everything you eat, keep junk food out of the house, get off the couch and spend your down time being active, weigh yourself every day (controversial but trust me), and get those close to you involved.

Losing weight is tough but the rewards are to numerous to count, good luck!
