Hello,

I am finishing my basement with the intention of carpeting the floor. There is a 6" floor cleanout and I want to maintain access to it after the carpet is laid down. If you look into the cleanout pipe, the threaded plug is about 1 foot down the pipe. The 6" pipe comes up to the concrete floor and it was cut flush with the floor. It is not threaded at the top. It has a flimsy plastic cap that will not stay on.

I want to install a sturdy cap, but I am having trouble finding the proper parts at my local plumbing supplier and big box stores. I'd prefer to find a cap that will cover the entire hole without breaking the concrete and play nicely with the carpet once it is laid down. Do you have any suggestions?

Will this be wall to wall carpet, tacked down? Just wondering how you would access the opening once the carpet is laid. Is the floor slightly sloped around the hole?

The floor is level. It will be wall to wall carpeting.

I forgot to mention that it would be tacked down. I plan to have a hole in the carpet for the floor access plate. I have also been toying with the idea of attaching carpet to the top of the plate if it won't interfere with accessing it.

To be even more specific, I'd like to have a plate that either slips into the 6" pipe, but is sturdy enough to walk over or a flat plate that can be screwed (tapconed) to the floor and removed. I would have preferred a screwtop cap flush with the floor, but I think that would require breaking concrete, so I'm trying to explore other options first.

I'm also wondering if moving the actual cap from 1 ft into the pipe to the surface would be worth the effort. I was thinking that I could possible reduce the size to a 4", which is easier to find parts for.

Is the threaded plug that is a foot down the pipe only a 4" plug? If so the 6" is most likely a sleeve put over the 4" because it was not high enough for the concrete. You could certainly bring that 4" up if that's the case.

After looking into it further, I contacted the plumbing company that put it in. The access is for backwater prevention, not cleanout. So it's not a sleeve, but I'd still like to find a sturdy cap for it.
