I would like to add 2 more hardwired detectors to my basement. There already exist one there that works.

Is it OK to just take 14/3 wire, tie it into the existing one, and then run the other two in series off the existing one? I am assuming it is since the 14/3 will provide unswitched power as well as the interconnect.

Also, I did make sure my new detectors are compatible with my existing ones.

You have it exactly, extend the 3 wire cable from any detector and wire the new the same. Does not need to be one after the other, can connect in any order.

When interconnecting Firex smoke detectors it says to use #18 AWG minimum solid or stranded wire between detectors.
Is there any reason this can not be done?

Does smoke detector goes off if tempurature in the house get really cold ?
