Is it possible to get a copy of the text messages my friends husband sent from a pre paid phone? I know you can obtain a copy when you have a contract with them but, is it possible to get it with a prepaid plan?

Depends on the carrier - in some cases, yes.

Also there are programs that recover deleted text messages. Of course, you can't recover from someone else's phone without a subpoena.
