Missouri bound- or any one- I was told carrier and rheem are good units and do not have a leaking problem per se but after decades of use they will leak maybe and if they do the puron- 410a that new coolant is corrosive and eats through comp shingle and wood roof material. Is this a load of crap from some one wanting to get rid of an old r 22 unit before summer 2010 deadline. I am installing a 2 1/2 ton hvac unit on my roof in California. Is there a replacement coolant for r22 like hot shot or nu 22??
American Standard is committed to 410a for 8 years and will no longer use 410 a after 8 years and epa will not let them use r 22 WHAT GIVES HERE I DO NOT WANT TO USE EITHER puron or r22.

You have been given a bunch of bad information.

All units can have a refrigerant leak problem but in today's world a possible leak is just about nonexistant in the unit itself but if it is a split system that has to be field piped that can be another story if the contractor doing th install does not know how to braze correctly or uses the wrong alloy. The units themselves are leak checked at the factory before they leave.

The coolant itself be it R-22 or R-410 will not have the time to eat at anything since they are both under high pressure and are a gas that disapates into the atmosphere in very short order. Now the refrigerant oils use with both types of refrigerant could soften the asphalt shingles but here again it will take a long time. In other words you will notice the A/C unit not cooling way before the oil could do any damage.

There is no dead line for selling R-22 units since all manufactures/dealers are allowed to sell all old stock R-22 in that they have on hand. The rule is that no more R-22 units can be manufactured and that date is passed. R-22 refrigerant will be around for 25 years or so especially with recycling so there is no fear of buying a R-22 unit and not being able to buy replacement gas if necessary.

R-410 and Puron is the same thing and it has been proven by Carrier to be an effective refrigerant for many years so it is not some new type of refrigerant.

The only equipment usually available today for residential units uses R-22 or R-410 so you will be using one of those.

Looks like you have been fed a load of crap with a rusty spoon by the person who told you this stuff. Also it is a known fact that some dealers lie about the R-22 thing just so they can sell off the old equipment by making up a date and time stating a fact that either the equiptment will not be able to be installed after a certain date or the R-22 gas will not be available. These tails are always for the dealers benefit and not the customer. The below click on item might be of interest if you are going to have a contractor do work for you.
