We are adding and addition on to an exisitng house with a crawl space.
We are adding an addition with a basement on to our existing home that only has a crawl spce under it. The foundation wall on the existing house is only 3 feet high but the addition will have 9 foot basement walls. Should the new basement wall be up against the exisitng foundation wall or can there be a space between them?

The new basement wall needs to be installed so that it is under the existing crawlspace wall or so that it replaces the existing crawlspace wall on that common side.

Or, the new wall must be constructed alongside the old common wall with the new wall tied into the old one using rebar.

Footings and foundations should be continuous and connected whenever possible, especially where you have unstable soil types.

Are you doing this project with or without a permit?

We are located in a rural area where permits are not required.

What rural area does not require permits, where are you located?

We are located in a farming community in the middle of Kansas. With all due respect, I'm not sure what having a permit or not has to do with my question. I am trying to complete this project as safely as possible while maintaining sound construction principles. This is why I have posted the question in hopes of obtaining an experts advice.

If I have offended you in some way I apologize! I only seek some advice.

No offense at my end just wanting to be sure we give you straight advice. If you are covered by a code it would have an effect on how you build, different codes have different requirements. Not sure about rural Kansas but I had been taught that every inch of the USA is inside some county and state and every county has adopted a building code. However, I never questioned my instructor. Try googling " your county, Kansas building code" just to see what comes up. In my area you would step back from your old footing 2' and then dig your new full depth foooting for the 9' wall. Back fill and compress to insure the old crawl footing does loose any integrity
