I bought a Harbor Breeze ceiling fan/light kit with a remote. I connected all wires between fan and remote receiver based on color. (black-black, white-white, blue-blue) But when I went to connect the remote to the ceiling, the receiver only has a black and white wire, while the ceiling has black, white, and a red wire for the light. What should I do with the red wire? I tried capping it off, just to see what would happen, and I got nothing. Note: I only have one switch, and it has red & black wires.

You may need to do more detective work because these colors frequently tell us a 3 way switch is connected. Does the single wall switch currently say ON?OFF on the lever?

I think I'm misunderstanding your question. I know it's not a three way switch, because it's in a bedroom, and it's the only room on the floor. As for what the wall switch says, it says, it doesn't say anything.

Look on the flipper part of the switch, usually white plastic. A single pole switch will be labeled ON or OFF on the plastic. If there is no labeling its likely a 3 way but we can do more later to confirm that. Take a close look at the white plastic part

Wow, you're right. It does have on/off on the switch.

You can cap off the red, and use the black, or vice versa.

OK its not a 3 way switch. Now test theblack to white and then the red to white which combinations gives power controlled by the switch.

Did you try both combinations?

What was installed there before, and how was it wired?

Thanks all for the help. I played with some different combinations, and found that the winning one was to cap off the black, and connect the red wire to the black wire on the remote receiver. Thanks for all your help!!
