I think the term you are looking for may be "a league of friendship".
Double check your textbook, though, to be sure that this is what you are looking for, as varying terms may be used.

You have picked a gigantic time. During the war the colonists in revolt used the Continental Congress to support a Revolutionary army and handle diplomacy with England and our Allies. The British occupied all the big cities during most of the war so that each "former colony" often had a puppet govt. of Loyalists in the cities while Revolutionaries met in each state to plot their plans. The land was a land of small farmers so people were used to making their own decisions. When we won the war we set up the Articles of Confederation, a decentralized govt. where most decisions were made by the elected sttate governments, not the weak National legislature (which hjad no Chief Executive elected by the poeople). The Confederation was too weak and after less than ten years we set up a Federal Government under the US Constitution.
