Hello, I have just read that you helped somebody to resolve an issue concerning an humming noise. Please, could you tell me your solution. We are getting crazy with this constant noise. I think it happened after the installation of the wireless internet connection or alarm system. Is that possible ? Thank you.

Before I can help I have to know the location of the hum. Is it coming from your pipes or from your computers speaker? If from the plumbing is it from the toilet? One of the faucets? Help me out here! Tom

It is impossible to locate where the noise is coming from. Otherwise, the problem would be easier to solve. It can be heard anywhere in the house, not outside. Thank you for your help.

Does it hum 24/7, or only when water is being used?

Not trying to jump in on Speedball's question, just curious.

Before you do anything, do this:

1. Turn water off over night at the main valve. See if the hum continues. Turn water back ON in the morning.
2. Following night, turn main elec. Breaker off. Leave it off over night. See if the hum continues.

Come back to tell us if the hum stopped with water or elec. OFF

I would like to thank everybody for trying to help. An electrician came yesterday and could not hear the "hum". He turned off the main elec. Breaker off, disconnected the alarm system and we could still hear the "hum". Last night, we turned off the water at the main valve (as suggested by Milo) and turned it on in the morning. The noise did not stop.
We will try to turn off the electricity tonight and see...

The electrician has already checked the electric and the hum's still there. That puts it in the plumbing.

But did you op-en a hot aqnd a cold faucet to relieve the pressure? If not do so and let me know the results.
A long time ago I had a call with symptoms like yours, Only this one kicked in at 3 in the AM and scared hell out of the customers. They thought their house was haunted. It was hard the track down because the water pipes picked up the vibration and carried it throughout the house. We call that sympathetic viberation. Take your hand and run it around the flat part of the flapper. Are the edges a little wavey? If so you have found the culprit. What's happening is the water seeping past the flapper lowers the water level in the tank and the ballcock attempts to compensate. In time the water seeping out and the water coming in will balance out. The ballcock can't shut off and the sound you hear is the washer vibrating against its seat. The repair is simple. Replace the flapper. A few installation tips. The linkage between the flapper and the flush lever should have 1/4" of play when the flapper's seated. The water level should be 1/2" below the top of the white overflow tube when the tank is filled.

One thing to consider. The alarm system possibly has backup power, so turning the main breaker off will not turn off the alarm system if that is the case.

Hello everybody. Last night, we turned off the main power and disconnected the back-up battery for the alarm system. The humming noise did not disappear. Tom, we are going to try your suggestion about the flapper.
We are not living close a main road and do not hear the traffic when we are outside.

Start by shutting off the water to the toilets at the shut off valve located beneath the tank. Now flush the toilet and listen. Still have a hum? Do it on the next toilet. Still there? OK!
Let's haul out the big guns. Go outside and turn off the water at the house shut off. Open a hot and cold faucet to relieve the pressure. Let me know if the hum's still around. I see you've already posted your complaint in appliances. Any luck there? Did you try what I suggested in my last post? Tom

We tried more things to see if this humming noise would disappear. We shut off the electricity and water at the same time + disconnected the alarm and 3 transformers. No success.
Now we have ordered a white sound machine. Hope that will help.

When you shut off the water did you open a hot and cold faucet to relieve the pressure? If not do it! Did you disconnect the battery back up on the alarm system? Just asking! Tom

Yes, Tom, we did everything you suggested and we are still hearing the humming noise. We received the white noise machine. It is just another sound to cover the "hum". Now, we try to negotiate with the owner to move out before the end of the lease. Not easy at all as nobody want to come at night (when the hum is very loud) to check the noise. That's life! Another problem after another...
