    Boss' Position Posted Externally
I took a position 5 years ago, with the understanding that my boss would be retiring in a few years and I would likely be in line for his job when he did. When his retirement announcement came, I was told that the position would be posted externally and I could apply for it if I wanted to.

On speaking with my division's VP, who is responsible for the hire, I expressed my concerns. It appeared to me that by him posting the job, it would only be mine if they couldn't "find somebody better."

So I took matters in my own hands, found another job, and tendered my resignation earlier this week. The reaction from my VP was one of total disbelief, with the sentiment being that it was somehow foolish and wrong for me to have done so. There has been some fallout already, and he came to me and said, "I just want to make sure nobody thinks that I wasn't going to give you the job."

There is no policy at my organization that said the job had to be posted. I told him that he's the boss and if he felt like he had to, then I can respect that. I just want to know if this is a common practice, and if so, why in the world would somebody put up with it if they didn't have to? I think I'm far better going to a company that is excited about having me with them instead of being treated with disrespect where I was, even if I did get the job. Am I missing something here?

There is no requirement that they don't see if there may not be better people, esp in today's economy, I do think you jumped the gun in finding some place before they made a choice.

Yes, you did not give them a chance to offer you the job, but assumed they would not

    "A bird in hand...."

In my opinion, I think that if he had promised you the job, then he should have put you in that position. No posting necessary.

Try not to burn any bridges.

Good luck on the new job.

    Go be happy.
