What are some good romantic or sad anime shows

Ah! My Goddess was a decent romance anime. But I'm not a huge fan of that kind.

Love Hina wasn't really a romance anime, though it did have romance as part of it (it's actually a harem/comedy anime).

I recommend Vampire Knight. It's sad and romantic, if you're into vampires. It's beautiful.
