    The "Sensation" Art Exhibit
The "Sensation" Art Exhibit is perhaps best known for having introduced so many controversial works of art at one time. One of the most controversial was Chris Ofili's The Holy Virgin Mary, a painting that combined, among other things, glitter and elephant dung. The "Sensation" paintings made their debut at the Brooklyn Museum of Art in New York in 1999, and many people there were offended by this depiction of the Virgin Mary. One of those offended was Rudy Giuliani, who was the mayor of New York at that time. He threatened to cut the funding for the museum and have the museum evicted from its building. View the image of the painting at http://www.ncac.org/timeline/1999.cfm and read an account of what happened at http://www.nytimes.com/library/arts/092399brooklyn-museum-funds.html. How does this work compare to the images of the Virgin Mary? If you were the museum's curator, would you have chosen to exhibit this piece? If so, how would you have responded to those who were offended by the piece?

Your response should be between 275 and 325 words in length, and you should cite any sources used.
