We want to build a chain link fence around our septic field in the back yard. The field consisits of the septic tank, main distribution line, and 10 chamber style leach lines, each 100 linear feet long, spaced at ten foot intervals. I need to know how close to the tank and chambers I can put the fence. The septic system is only 9 years old, so do I need to consider space around the tank for future replacement?

You can put it as close as the depth allows you to. Your main problem is depth required for your fence posts. So long as that clears then there is no problem.

So can you tell us why you ned to fence in the field? Also, are you saying you have 10 lines each 100' long? Most fileds are under 150'

Dad of3 answered your questiom, now answer Bob. Why do you want to fence it in and why such a large drain field?
When our septic field was put in 56 years ago my father planted a citrus grove over it and the nutriments nourished our trees long after the country put in a sewer line and we abandoned the septic system. I realize that's not relevant but I just thought I'd pass that along. Cheers, Tom

We need to fence in the back yard for the dog, and the septic field takes up most of the back yard. Our field is larger because the soil here drains at a slower rate then other soils. Besides we didn't have any choice, the County Engineer determined the size of the drainage field. Thanks everyone for the help.

We planted a grove of citrus trees over the filter field with no ill effect ( except to nourish the trees) As long as you don't hut a branch with a post, (I hope you hand dig first to check.) Should make your pooch a happy camper.
AS for the septic tank i8f you want to fence it offthen fence it off.
It probably won't need replacement in your lifetime.

Yes I did hand dig to find the main distribution line, and the start & end of each chamber run. As much as I would like to have trees in the yard, I'm not adding anything inside the fence. I'll just plant them outside the fence. I think I'll just fence around the tank just in case. Thanks again for the help and ideas.
