I have two types of grass (or weeds) that are trying to take over my yard. I'm pretty sure one of them is goosegrass and I bought some weed killer for that. But I'm not sure what the other is.

It looks like straw. It has very little density and is completely browned out. Other houses in my neighborhood have this same type of grass and it has taken up to 1/3 of their yard. For me, I know it's spreading from my neighbor, I just don't know what it is or how to stop it. Thanks for the help.

Dig out a chunk of it and take it, roots and all, in a plastic bag to a local nursery and let them identify it and tell you what the best control is.

It actually looks like bermuda grass that we grow here in the south. Very hardy and beautiful once the warm summer comes.

If you ever find a good answer to the problem let me know. I have the same grass and it is taking over my flower beds. I can't keep up with it. HELP!!

Okay, so I found out what the grasses are. One is nimblewill (a weed) and the other is zoysia grass. From what I've read the only way to kill both of these is to use grass killer. So I used it... and accidentally killed off a third of my yard!

I'm so tired and frustrated that I'm thinking about buying sod. If my math is correct, I would need about $200-$250 worth of Home Depot sod vs. the $150 it would cost for me to seed the yard. If I dig up the dead grass and spread some top soil, can I just lay the sod on top of that?

Just make sure you check the label on the grass killer you used. Some of them have a residual effect, and you don't want it to kill your new grass. You might have to wait a while before you lay your sod.

And if your neighbors have the same stuff, it's going to blow in your 'pretty' sod.:( I've seen it happen. You need to stay on top of it. Many people have killed their lawn. Don't get depressed, take it slowly and you will get it back. Lawns are a pain in the butt:eek: Those beautiful ones that you see and drool over... were a lot of work.

I decided to try the sod in a small area first and I'm glad I did. Half of the 20 sqft died out. I wound up spreading perennial rye and it's just starting to come up. Hopefully in a couple months my yard will be back to normal.

Just make sure to keep it watered. You need to keep an eye on it until it gets a good root system established.
