    Dual-status and itemized deductions
    Hi,

I entered the US with a J-1 visa and became a green card holder during the year. I am still living in the US and I plan on filing a dual-status tax return. I was exempt from tax withholding under a tax treaty before I got my green card.

I have a few questions regarding the itemized deductions I am allowed to list on the schedule A attached to the 1040 form:
    1) Can I put the entire state taxes I paid during the year (including those I paid while I was exempt from federal tax), or just the state taxes I paid after getting my green card?
    2) same questions regarding my medical expenses. Most of them happened when I was on a J-1 status.

Thank you in advance. Your help is greatly appreciated.

    1. You can deduct state taxes paid during the year except if you are from India.
    2. No you can not deduct medical expenses of J-1 period.
