I'm searching for a movie that revolved around an alien contraption to travel trough space or something like that.

There was this scientist in it that had cancer and was living in a space station to slow down the dissease spreading.
Everyone had their doubts about whether it was true or not, eventually some countries came together and made the thing.

When it was done the main character went inside this ball formed shuttle and was dropped from the construction and traveled to an unknow planet where he met an alien lifeform.
When he came back the hours he had spent on that planet were just a few seconds on earth so everybody thought it was a fluke. Then at the end of the movie they are at a court and the lawyer asks "If it only lasted a few seconds how come there is over several hours of video captured?" and then the movie ends.

Anyone knows what I'm talking about ?:) it's been a quite a few years since I saw it and been searching for it ever since
