I bought a puppy on the 16th March 2010. The puppy keeps on scratching herself until she cries. I have taken her to the vet on the same day I got her for her injections and for a check up. The breeder told me that she noticed fleas on the mother and puppies but spayed Frontline. The vet gave her a shot and some tablets for the itching which I have used. Could not give me anything else as the frontline is fine for 6 weeks.

Well, getting home I noticed her skin was terrible, with white flakes and terrible build up of some sort which I have now managed to get rid of. She still scratches but I do not see anything on her, except where she scratches then this part forms little scars.

Meantime I developed a terrible rush all over my body in such a matter that I had to see a doctor. He reckons however that if I looked like this from a biting parasite, then the puppy should be dead by now. They reckon it could be chicken pocks because of the nature of the marks, but I am sure it must be from the puppy as my mother and sister now also have the same bite marks which itches a lot.

I use Eukanuba puppy food.

Please help I am desperate as I feel the vet did not even look at her skin.

If the pup was scratching that bad when you got her, then it is something she picked up at the breeder. I doubt if it is fleas. The Frontline isn't working apparently, so that proves it.

You need to see another vet, you also need to talk to the breeder about this situation which isn't right and she probably knows it.

Good find, KISS. That certainly looks similar to chicken pox (as the doc diagnosed!) And it spread through the whole family. OP brought them home on the pup, no less. That breeder should be taken to task over this. Bedbugs certainly can't be gotten rid of over night

I was going to suggest giving pup a warm bath in Dawn dish soap, and see about adding some omega oils to the diet. But, I think KISS may have hit the mark!

The only thing that I can think of that can trasmit from canine to human would be Sarcoptic mange.

Has the puppy stopped itching completely? Or does he still itch? Is he losing hair?

Fleas don't typically attach humans.. especially those who shower daily. But it is possible. Typically the fleas will bite and an allergic reaction is what causes the welts and itching.

You may want to have the pup checked for Sarcoptic Mange... Or any type of skin disoarder for that matter.

Have you contacted the breeder again to see if her problems have cleared up?

I did speak to the breeder again and she assured me that she did use frontline however, I did mention to her that my puppy has flakes all over her body as well as a build up of some sort which to me did not look like just flakes.

I am new in the area but have come in contact with another vet and will take the puppy in to have her examined again. It is not losing hair, still itching, but not as bad as before. Nothing on her skin any more apart from little sores as she scratches.

When you go to the vet. Ask for a skin scrapping right off the bat.

What kind of build up? Like someone with really bad dandruff? Or is it kind of goopy? Have you tried bathing your pup?

There is a really good shampoo that I came accros that I used on a pup with demodectic mange along with bug bites and fleas. Its called Septiderm-V Antiseptic Skin Care. It helps with the itching. It soothes the skin. I had to bathe him every week until he got better. The shampoo really helped rehydrate his skin and help with the sun burn and the bug bites. I don't think its bed bugs. Bed bugs typically attach both occupents of the bed. Have you had any of these problems prior to having the puppy?

I have inspected the bed, no sign of any blood spots.

No I did not have any problem prior to bringing the puppy home. Yes the build up looked like a piling up of dandruff but I also notices small lice on her. They build up was hard and was sitting tight on the skin. This is all off now as I did bath her in a shampoo I got from my mother when her dog had lice. I will as the vet tomorrow regarding other options. Thank you very much for your help. I am going out of my mind with this scratching doesn't know how the poor pup feels.

Frontline, I believe, Protectes against lice.

I really hope this is nothing serious. Try not to use any medicated shampoos until the vet prescribes one to you. The septiderm shampoo is very very gentle on skin and coat. Do you live close to a petco/petsmart? If you do, maybe you could find some relief for this pup.

I'm going to go with Lucky on this one. Scabies is a lot more common than bedbugs in dogs, and can skip one target while hitting all the others, like your husband.
