I am replacing an old GE motor, fan blade, and capacitor, three wires. The new motor is a AO Smith. With four wires. Tan, tan-white, yellow, and black. I am going to wire up as a three wire connection, as follows, tan-white to the capacitor, (two prong) then, the yellow to the capacitor, ( four prong), then the black, to the contactor.

Does this appear to be right? Also, I forgot to check fan rotation, prior to removal. The motor is seen from the top of our unit, fan blade is under that. Should the fan rotation be CW or CCW. I understand that the fan should be pulling air up through the sides of the unit and air should be coming up from the unit, a piece of thread should be blowing upward. Please make a comment...

There's a lable pasted on the side of the motor,, directions for wiring, follow them closely,and yes the air should be blowing up through the top, not being there this is about all that can be said, as for direction, clockwise or counter-clockwise,a lot if motors can be changed by switching a couple wires

If you don't have a thread, I think a rope would work. Swapping 2 wires as mentioned to reverse direction is usual, Air should be blowing out the top.
Do you have a number for the motor?
