I'm a 18+ male living in Toronto, Canada, who recently got caught shoplifting from a supermarket and was charged with theft under $5000. I was taken to the back by the LP officer and he called the police. While waiting for the police, he had written a report about my crime. Once the police office arrived, he scanned my drivers license to check my record. I was clean, and he said he had no time to deal with my crime and was let go with a warning. He said that if I was caught a second time, a police officer would be able to check my record and find that I had already been issued a warning. Hence, making the second offense more punishable.

My question is, will this record be permanent? And if so, when employers/schools/etc. do a background check on me, will they see this warning note of theft? Is there some sort of way to remove this note? Some community service or a program?

Also, should I be expecting some sort of notification in the mail?

Consider yourself lucky and keep your fingers crossed and don't do it again. Once lucky, twice unlucky. Your have a horseshoe up your B***tt pardner.

Don't look for anything in the mail, the police officer just had more pressing issues to deal with, maybe a coffee break was one of them !

I was very co-operative throughout the whole process. Even making small talk with the LP officer. Took the police office 80 minutes to arrive, had to do something!

Is the fact that the police officer showed up and I was given zero documents a good sign that nothing will come in the mail? I really don't want to find out down the road that I am being charged, I want this behind me ASAP.

As I said, you were lucky. If you weren't charged on the spot and given a citation, then don't worry about it. Move on with your life and just don't do it again.

I have a similar case; only I got a letter to pay a civil recovery. Will I be asked to come to court as well? I did not sign any documents, but my picture was taken.

Unfortunately people have posted that a summons has followed in the mail (in Canada). If the Police Officer said it was "just" a warning I would believe it was "just" that.

The only way to know if it's on your permanent record is to have someone run a check.

I honestly don't think it is. I DO know, however, that in the US traffic violation "warnings" ARE visible to anyone who runs your Police record.

Yes, it cost $25. For a police check in Ontario to see if there are any chargeable offences. You get it back in a week by supplying your drivers license number. If none show up, then its clear and nothing to worry about. If anyone is concerned, $25. Is pretty cheap to set your mind at rest.

LOL, yes, JKT, isn't it wonderful, just like hockey. Hockey and shoplifting. It could be a team sport actually.

Here - in the US - it's not paying credit card debt. That is never a team sport.

I've been caught shoplifting for 45$ at a supermarket (sushi and some other things, I was hungry lol). I went in the back, I had to sign papers that I wasn't allowed to be on that supermarkets premise or any affiliated companies. I had to pay the sum of like 300$ for the paper work done and the amount of money stolen. I'm wondering since it's my first offense (and I'm over 18) if that would show on my record? It seems like its harder for me to get a job since the incident lol but that could just be a coincidence

I had a similar incident and they told me I was charged with theft under $5000 but let me go with a warning. Does this mean I have to go to court? Does this mean it's on my crimincal record check?
