Refund of federal taxes - J1 visa holder under tax treaty
    Hi everyone
I am a J1 visa holder and arrived last year in January. I am eligible for the tax treaty to be exempt of federal taxes. Unfortunately University didn't apply right away as they got confused (Italian citizen, French resident... ); so I have paid directy from my salary for 6 months mast year. The treaty was finally applied starting July 2009.
What should I do to get a refund? Is there anything special I should do?
Thank you in advance for your help.

You will file nonresident tax return Form 1040NR or 1040NR-EZ with Form 8843. On the return show tax withheld. Based on your tax return, you will get the refund.
