I like to fish and I like to keep fish to eat. The biggest problem that I have with cleaning fish is the disposal of the fish-cleaning waste, especially in the summer. Our garbage collection day is on Friday, so if I go fishing on Saturday morning... the fish entrails sit in the garbage all week (stinky!). Our current solution is to freeze the remnants until Friday morning and then put them in the garbage (my wife is not a big fan of this solution).

So, I was thinking that I could make a fish cleaning station and put it in my basement. I was thinking of a butcher-block countertop plus a sink with a disposer under it, plumbing it all to drain to the sewer. Basically, it'd be like a basement laundry tub, without the laundry.

My question is: how big/powerful of a disposer would I need to grind up fish heads, bones, etc. I found something similar on the internet, but they were 4-person fishing cleaning stations that had 5-hp disposers. Would I need to go with that big of a disposer?

(the good news, from the plumbing perspective, is that I don't normally catch very large fish).

But I might also recommend to take some of work away from the disposal and maybe use a decent high grade food processor. That way it's a 2 step process but it will keep from overloading the unit. The other thing would be to use a processor and have a mulch pile to drop it into and cover. It would be great for your garden.
