When you used the disc brake pad spreader, did you open the bleeder screw or remove the cap to the master cylinder reservoir first? Did you replace all of the brake fluid?
Did you remove each ABS wheel speed sensor mounting bolt (Torx E8) and clean the sensor with a rag and WD-40?

The pedal could be stiff if the calipers are in bad shape and the piston binds, usually due to not changing the brake fluid every 2 years. Another possibility is a bad master cylinder.
