It really depends on what state you are in and what type of counseling you want to be in (social work, licensed professional counselor, etc.). Most states (if not all) require a criminal background check to apply for your license, and a lot of graduate programs require the check before they will even accept you into the program. Also keep in mind that even if you are able to obtain licensure, a lot of employers will also do a background check, and most probably won't hire you with a felony on your record.
