Section 508 of the Internal Revenue Code (26 USC sect. 508) exempts churches from the necessity to obtain a ruling that they are exempt organizations (for the purpose of tax deductability of donations made to them). However some churches choose to obtain such a ruling anyway, out of an abundance of caution.
