My aluminum (horizontally) sliding glass windows won't shut all the way
My aluminum (horizontally) sliding glass windows won't shut all the way. The frame from the front pane runs into the frame of the back pane when the window is within inches of closing. I can't get the panes far enough apart for them to clear each other. Any suggestions?

Are all of the tracks free and clear? If so then somehow your home has settled and you need to adjust the window fram to make it work right. How long has it been like this?

Yes, all of the tracks are clear. Virtually every window in our house exhibits this problem to some degree or another and has every since we purchased the house in 2003. The windows were installed in 1988 when the house was built by the previous owners. This makes me think it is a design defect in the window itself since it happens in all the windows but maybe the house settling has caused all of them to shift. With most of the windows, the amount of frame to frame rubbing is small enough that you can just push hard to get it to clear. But two of the windows just won't clear at all. They are in the same room so maybe that's where the house has settled the most. I should also mention that the one window I am working on, I can't get the front(sliding) window frame out of the track, even in the fully opened position.
