I have just bought a new knob for shower it looks like it should push on but is this how they go on it seems stiff I don't want to break it

This doesn't tell us much. Is there a round piece on top of the handle that comes off? If so pop it off and see if it doesn't slip over the stem and simply bolt on with a screw on the stem. Can you post a picture? Regards, Tom
