I need to lower the toilet and so have to unglue the black drain pipe
Our apartment had a raised floor which we removed. Now we have the problem of a toilet flange which is too high, and there are fittings glued onto fittings, and big structural beams in the area. Even if we could get permission to cut into the ceiling below us, you might not be able to get at it very well. Is there any way to unglue the pipe so that we could cut it down and put on a new flange?

Simply cut the pipe and flange down to floor level. You may then prime and glue on a new flange.
    Good luck, Tom

Tom, I guess I forgot the critical part - the floor had been raised by the previous owner, and there is a coupling at the floor level put there to extend the drain- so we'd have to cut into this coupling and somehow grind it out? or somehow un-glue it in order to put in a shorter piece of pipe and new flange.
    Thanks, Sue

It can be done with the right amount of heat, a small sharp screwdriver and a lot of patience, but I would suggest just cutting the coupling off flush with the floor and then use a twist and set closet flange. This flange actually fits inside the three inch pvc pipe, so the coupling on the outside won't make any difference. Hope this helps.

On second thought, is your pipe three inch or four inch. The only twist and sets I've seen are four inch, not sure if they make one for three inch. Maybe one of the other guys here will know.
