I'm installing a bar sink in the basement. I would like to place the drain pipe horizontally inside the wall. Its approx 10 ft. to the soil stack and I want to know if its OK to either drill through or notch out the existing 2x4's. The wall divides the basement and an attached garage. Age of home is 10 years.

I suggest drilling the studs on center if possible, not notching. We use 2 and 9/16 bits for 1 1/2 and two inch pipe. You are planning to vent the bar sink right?

As MGD77 said, best to drill through the studs with 2-9/16" self feeder bit (see image). You'll want to pitch the pipe at about 1/4" per foot, add a cleanout at the stack and as required by code under the bar sink. You'll want to vent the sink with an 1.5" vent that runs up and either connects to another vent or penetrates the roof by itself (2" minimum). You may also want to consider a mechanical vent (called an AAV... see other image) which just needs to be installed under the bar sink and be readily accessible for replacement in the future if needed.

A non-mechanical vent is always best case, but if it is an extreme hardship to run a vent up and through the building/roof then the AAV works pretty good, too!
