I have a clogged lead drain that I want to replace with pvc. I have read a lot of posts on here that suggest using a fernco donut to make the transition fron cast iron to pvc. Are there any other solutions? Also if the donut is the way to go, where can I get one for XH cast iron? I called a few places in the Philly area but no one had any in stock. Thanks.

There are several ways to transition from cast iron to PVC.
1) A Fernco Donut would be the best. Remove the lead joint and pull everything out being careful not to crack the hub. Follow instructions About inserting and lubricating both the donut and the pipe. Also bevel the PVC pipe with a file. It's also acceptable to trim off a few ridges in the donut to start it. (see image)
2) Remove the lead joint and pull everything out being careful not to crack the hub. You may now Yarn in a short piece of cast iron and convert using a Fernco Shielded Coupling, (see image) **OR**
3) In the past I've installed a lead and oakum poured and caulked joint using PVC directly in the hub. If you do this you will have to have a pan of water to cool the lead before it burns into the PVC, Then it can be
lightly caulked the same as a regular lead joint.
