I noticed the toilet begin to back up- I checked the pump (the pump is normally loud enough to hear when it dispels water) now only has a faint "hum" and does not empty any water.

Shut the power off. You either have a shorted winding in the motor or there's something caught in the impeller. Pull the pump and check.
Good luck, tom
Thank you for your response: Unfortunately, I got as far as unplugging the pump and/or lift switch and opening the cap (simple- it was only a few screws) to realize I was way out of my lane. So, 475.00 usd later I was told it was indeed a clogged impellar. Nevertheless, the plumber was cool, he showed me step by step what I needed to do should this happen again. "What a sport:rolleyes:" Thanks to all the helpful comments etc.
Finally, one of the posts indicated that if I didn't hear the impellar trying to move that the motor was shot.. this was inaccurate- I don't know how long the motor was humming before I powered down; but the motor was fine after clearing the clog. Thanks again all!
Can you pull that post up and show it to me so it can be corrected.Quote:

Glad you got all fixed up. If we can ever be of service again just ask.
Good luck, Tom
