My mom was in a car accident and is finally home after 7 months. She received lots of cards, visits, flowers, treats, help at home, transportation to physio appointments. She would like to thank her family, friends and medical personnel that have helped her on her road to recovery.

What's the question? Are you asking if its better to send personal thank you cards or put something in the newspaper? I wouldn't do the newspaper. It's impersonal. And today, more and more people get their news online, and fewer people read the actual paper. Unless you're in a tiny town where everyone knows everyone and still relies on the paper for local news.

Traditionally, individual thanks for family and friends should be cards, and general thanks to hospital staff should be a collective gift. Fruit baskets are kind of passe', but home made cookies are a lot of work for someone fresh out of the hospital. You might volunteer to help her.
