    USB ports do not work
For some reason when trying to use my mouse on the XP the USB ports do not work. I can't even log on as PC is stuck on the log on window, plus the USB ports are locked too. SO I am using a Vista PC now, but all my documents are on the XP and I need them, at least to backup.
Is it a matter of a USB driver repair or has the XP completely crashed? If it is a matter of a driver, I can't even log on to the XP to repair. Is it then finished? Or is there another way to get into the XP? Thanks
    Thanks

How old is this computer? Does it have a PS/2 port? What is your keyboard plugged into?

Has this mouse worked before on that machine?

Have you tried other usb ports?
-try unplugging the mouse and restart and after system started, attach mouse to a USB port to see if works?

    Have you tried another mouse?

Does this PC also have a ps2 port and you have a ps2 mouse you could try?

Any changes that either happened or that you perhaps made to your computer around the time that the problem started; particularly any Software or Hardware that you installed or setup.

The computer is an HP about 4 years old. I'm not sure where a PS/2 port is. I have another port in the back and a mouse that has the green attachment for there instead of the ones using the USB ports. Is that what you mean? It always worked from the USB ports until the other day but I can try another mouse to another input.

Yes that is it. That is your ps/2 port. You can plug in the mouse there to be able to use it. Then investigate the problem.

If you cannot log on to xp normaly you should go on the back side like this start your pc-press F8 the select the safe mode or safe mode with networking if you need internet, then you can investigate the problem and save the domuments you need.
