    Carrier compressor
A/C told me carrier compressor "grounded" and recommended I replace with entire new Trane system for $7,000 because freon not compatible with new Carrier systems. I am now getting 2 second opinions. Do you think I just need to replace compressor? One company says they must find out why compressor failed and if acid is reason. Is acid a factor? In one of your Answers, you recommend checking burnt wires. Would this cause compressor replacement? 1st company quoted compressor $1600 but did not mention new outdoor unit. How much would new outdoor system cost?

You didn't mention wha size your air conditioner is or what the age of it is and it would help to give you any ideas if we had that information.

Also there is a 30% tax write off, up to $1500, if you buy a certain efficientey rating, so keep this in mind when making up your mind.

You should also get a Carrier quote.
